Vocal Coaching

“It is a great pleasure to work with aspiring young artists as well as those whose journey is already in earnest. Drawing on my experience working with outstanding conductors (Sir Colin Davis, Sir Bernard Haitink, Sir Andrew Davis, Zubin Mehta, Franz Welser Möst, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Richard Bonynge, Carlo Rizzi, Simone Young, Gustav Kuhn) vocal coaches (Martin Isepp, Ernest St John Metz, Janine Reiss, Joan Dorneman, Nico Castel, Anthony Legge, Peter Robinson, David Harper), directors (Sir Peter Hall, Dieter Dorn, Gian Carlo Menotti, John Copley, Johannes Schaff, Göran Järvefelt, Elijah Moshinsky, Herbert Ross) accompanists (Geoffrey Parsons, Graham Johnson, Paul Hamburger, Sharolynn Kimmorley, Piers Lane) in a career spanning 35+ years, my aim is to assist the artist in identifying their own unique voice and gifts and apply this in a beautifully crafted, honest outpouring manner – without artifice or unnecessary affectations.”

Opera Performance & Role preparation

“The demands of opera, even during my lifetime, have changed enormously. The expectations of audiences now accustomed to the realism of film and TV have impacted on the art form. There is less accommodation given to “dramatic licence” and more insistence that despite the sometimes “scarcely to be believed plot lines in opera” the actual individual performances should endeavour to reflect this more modern approach. Together we will explore suitable repertoire choices, the characters, (both vocally and dramatically) prepare the roles for rehearsals and then to deliver a performance which is both believable and accurate to the composer’s intention.  Welcome to the fascinating (and sometimes contradictory) world of performing Opera to an exceptional level.”

Recital & The Art of Song

“Art Song or more specifically German lieder has been my great love from a very early age and my passion for it has only deepened and matured with the passing years. The joy of forensically analysing the intentions of both poet and composer expressed in both text and compositional devices is an unending quest. I am happy to work discretely with both singer and accompanist but my preferred methodology is working jointly contemporaneously.  Much is revealed in these sessions - the unique already established relationship between singer and accompanist exposes hidden gems as part of an holistic creative process.”

In the Studio

“The work we do together in the studio aims to reveal the journey of the character, whether in opera or in recital, with a considered mature interpretation that can withstand the rigours of critical scrutiny. Specificity and clarity of intention are the beacons which illuminate great artists. It is this which underpins the studio work and in doing so we, as performance artists, fulfil our obligation to composer and librettist (poet).”
